Tigers are Bad for Horses

Tiger are bad for horses

Tigers are Bad for Horses is an electronic, alternative act with a lush sound. Made up of Mellen Funke and Lyell Evans Roeder, this duo from Washington, DC strive to push musical boundaries with their majestic arrangements and surprising melodic shifts.

How would you describe your music and sound?
We are an alternative pop duo that blends lilting vocals with jazz influences, multi-textured piano and production. Our sound in large part comes from the varied backgrounds as musicians that Mellen and Lyell (on vocals and keyboards respectively) come out of and the way that we fuse our individual styles and musical preferences into one.

What was the inspiration behind the song “Messenger”?
“Messenger” is inspired by dealing with the ideas of youth and the constantly shifting nature of life. It was written at a time of flux and stem from musical influences such as Alt-J and FKA Twigs, who both so effectively introduce the unexpected and use creative transitions.
What are you working on now and where can people find you?
We are preparing to move across the country to Los Angeles this summer. We’re really excited about the move and you’ll be able to see us live there starting in a few months! Until then, you can find us playing shows around our hometown of Washington, DC. Also check out our latest single “Embers”, released in May via Proper Vibes.

Sprinkle some fairy dust and wander in to the enchanted world of Kalyna Rakel. This free spirit will make you feel like building a magical fort as she delicately spins her golden tales.

How would you describe your music and sound?
My music stems from jazz, which is my greatest influence. I can listen to Billie Holiday till I’m blue in the face. She is one of my biggest inspirations for sure. My voice has jazz qualities to it, but the guitar can sound more folky at times. This new album I’m coming out with called “The Other Side” is a bit different from what I’ve done before. Not only is the production quality a lot different (with strings and everything), but it shares some very personal stories which I was hesitant to release at first. But I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling these emotions, so hopefully it will help someone to feel a little less alone out there.

What was the inspiration behind the song “For Some Reason” ?
I wrote the song “For Some Reason” when I was in a long distance relationship and it was during a time when we were apart. I was reflecting on my feelings about him and I felt so completely in love, like he was made for me… like I had found my soul mate. No one else could compare. It was a familiarity and openness I felt with him that seemed so natural… And for me, it’s always been a struggle to open up to someone completely. My songs tell a lot, but that’s only because they’ve always been the most comfortable way for me to express myself.

What are you working on now and where can people find you?
I am coming out with a new album called “The Other Side”, to be released in May! Look out for it on iTunes and Spotify and all online stores. I have previous albums already available. You can also visit my website kalynarakel.com for upcoming tour dates, and you can find me on all social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SoundCloud, etc – all under my name Kalyna Rakel. I also have a YouTube channel where I post my music videos and van updates… Yes that’s right… I said van… Her name is “Daisy the Van” and she is my best bud! I got a beat up old cargo van last summer and built it up inside, with a bed and shelving and all I need to survive and tour around in! I made 14 videos of the whole build and she turned out perfectly! I’m so grateful to be able to come and go as I please and take the music with me, playing on the streets and wherever.

Shy Harry

shy harry

Shy Harry is a rock trio from Cambridge ontario with a strong focus on musicianship. Their song Silly Dove will certainly put you in the mood for some (silly or not so silly) dancing!

How would you describe your music and sound?
We are a rock trio with a strong groove influence.  We focus on raw instrumentation without getting into a bunch of effects.  We did our first three videos live off the floor and then eventually recorded our debut album live off the floor as we wanted to keep that live energy throughout all that we do.
#2. What was the inspiration behind the song “Silly Dove”?
Silly Dove is actually the one song on our album that was just written for fun.  All of the other songs have a lot of personal meaning and backstory but Silly Dove was simply written to play off some interesting imagery, someone who is aimless and focusing on the wrong things being as a silly bird.

#3. What are you working on now and where can people find you?
We are working on the writing for a second album.  We’re also working with a group in LA regarding some movie music placements.  We will not be performing much this summer as one of our members has to be away for a while, however come the fall we’ll be performing a ton (back at Horseshoe again and the Rivoli) and likely doing an East Coast tour.  Our website, ShyHarry.com, will list all of our shows and you can listen to our album on Soundcloud and Bandcamp…we’re also on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
